Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer described Kamala Harris as a 'total badass', as she, Senators Elizabeth Warren and Mark Kelly - and civil rights activist Reverend Al Sharpton - lined up to praise the Democratic Party's presidential nominee on the final night of the DNC in Chicago on Thursday.

"We need someone strong enough to come up with a plan, to tell the truth, and to bring people together. Right now, before the crisis is when we get to choose, why wouldn't we choose the leader who's tough, tested, and a total badass?" Whitmer said.

"Donald Trump doesn't know you at all. You think he understands that when your car breaks down, you can't get to work? No. His first word was probably 'Chauffeur'," she claimed.

Sharpton contrasted Harris and Trump on race relations.

"Donald Trump, a fellow New Yorker I've known for 40 years," he said. "Only once, once in that time did he take a position on racial issues. He spent a small fortune on full-page ads calling for the execution of five innocent young teenagers."

He was referring to the Central Park Five, who were subsequently found to have been wrongfully convicted of rape in 1989. In the wake of the original trial, Trump took out advertisements backing the return of the death penalty in the state.

Senator Mark Kelly claimed Trump was "too busy sucking up to the dictators and dreaming of becoming one himself" to be effective in office. The former president himself has praised his good relations with 'tough' leaders around the world.

Meanwhile Elizabeth Warren claimed that Harris 'can't be bought and she can't be bossed around'.

"She enforced the law, she fought the giant banks and she delivered billions of dollars of help for families. And that is the difference between a criminal and a prosecutor," she said.

According to media reports, the nominee's record and reputation as a 'top cop' prosecutor, played badly during her 2020 campaign for the nomination, following the Black Lives Matter protests.

Harris became the nominee after incumbent Joe Biden quit the race amid mounting concerns over his health and a much-criticised debate with Trump. Her Republican rival described her candidacy as a 'coup' against Biden, after the current president continued to insist he was best placed to win in the days and weeks before he stepped aside. The presidential election takes place on November 5.
