Description

Dozens of fire engines and firefighters battled the flames at a block of flats in the Kola district, central Beirut, following an alleged Israeli airstrike on Sunday night.

Footage shows crews using hoses and clearing rubble. Parts of the building were severely damaged, with parked cars nearby also hit.

At least three were reported killed, while 16 others were injured, according to local media. The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) claimed its military security chief Mohammad Abdel-Aal, military commander Imad Odeh, and member Abdelrahman Abdel-Aal, were killed.

Israel had not commented on the strike at time of publication. If confirmed, it would represent the county's first strike of the centre of the capital since 2006, following waves of strikes on the southern suburbs - including Friday's attack on Hezbollah HQ which killed leader Hassan Nasrallah.

The IDF's latest campaign of airstrikes began last Monday, with more than 1,030 killed and 6,300 injured in total, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry.

Tensions escalated in mid-September after a series of explosions of wireless communications devices used by Hezbollah left dozens dead and thousands injured. Hezbollah has also launched hundreds of rockets into northern Israel.

Israel and Hezbollah have been exchanging cross-border fire since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza in October 2023.
