Description

Hundreds of activists took part in a rally and vigil in Berlin on Sunday, calling for the release of the remaining Hamas hostages a day ahead of the anniversary of the October 7 attacks.

"I think that the situation is very, very critical and I think it is important that we remember the victims tomorrow on the first anniversary of the massacre," said one protester, who said she feared that getting more people alive was 'very, very slim'.

Footage shows an installation at Babelplatz, featuring chairs with pictures of hostages on them, as well as a sofa stained with red liquid.

"You know many people are still kept hostages and they're from all over the world, not just Israelis, and we have to bring them back," added another.

The Israel-Hamas war began with the militant group's attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, and continued with the IDF's airstrikes and ground incursion in the enclave. Around 1,139 Israelis, mostly civilians, were killed in the initial assault, according to Israel - and around 200 taken hostage - while the ensuing Gaza war has led to around 42,000 deaths according to the Palestinian side.

A number of hostage-prisoner swaps have taken place, although talks to agree a permanent ceasefire have stalled. The conflict recently spread to Lebanon, where Israel launched a 'limited' ground incursion against militant group Hezbollah following a campaign of airstrikes. The sides have conducted cross-border strikes since the outbreak of the Gaza war.
