Saudi Deputy Foreign Minister Walid bin Abdul Karim Al-Khuraiji met with Sudan’s Transitional Sovereignty Council (TSC) Chairman Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan during an official visit on Monday, where they discussed the resumption of Saudi-backed negotiations to end the civil war.
Footage shows the TSC head shaking hands with Al-Khuraiji in Port Sudan before sitting down for bilateral talks alongside Saudi and Sudanese delegations.
The meeting reportedly addressed the importance of expanding the so-called 'Jeddah Platform' negotiations, while the Chairman of the TSC expressed reservations about the involvement of any party supporting what he referred to as the 'rebel militia'.
Meanwhile, Sudanese Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, Hussein Awad, emphasised Saudi Arabia's commitment to Sudan's security and stability and its 'unlimited support', recognizing Sudan's stability as having a direct impact on the security of the region while speaking at a press briefing on Monday.
Saudi Arabia has been engaged in mediation efforts between the warring Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) since last May. While several truces were brokered, both sides have accused each other of breaching the agreements.
Mediation efforts under the Jeddah Platform umbrella were suspended in October 2023.
Sudan has been experiencing severe turmoil since fighting broke out between the army and RSF in April 2023, resulting in the deaths of approximately 15,000 people, according to the United Nations.
The conflict has forced more than 8 million people to flee their homes, including 1.8 million who have left the country, making Sudan the country with the highest displacement rates globally, according to the International Organization for Migration.
