Description

Hundreds of pro-Palestine activists staged a die-in protest in Madrid on Sunday against 'genocide' in Gaza.

Footage shows the protesters gathering at the Puerta del Sol, lying on the ground with Palestinian flags and scarfs draped around their bodies, while some were seen holding a giant Palestinian flag. The die-in protest took place in silence as a sign to pay tribute to the war victims in Gaza.

"What saddens me most is that mercenaries, terrorists and fascists from all over the world have come to occupy my homeland," shared Moses, an activist from Palestine.

"They want to leave Aziz Jordan and Gaza as a plot of land, they want to tear it all up so that it is a recognisable land and they can rebuild it in their own way," added Paco, another protester.

According to local media, around 400 protesters gathered at the Puerta del Sol and took part in the demo. It was mobilised by several organisations such as the Al-Yadur (Palestinian Youth), BDS Madrid and the Solidarity Network against the occupation of Palestine, among others.

Fighting continues for the 11th month after Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel on October 7, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200 according to Israeli officials.

Israel declared war on the group and a 'complete siege' of Gaza, with a large-scale campaign of air strikes. A ground incursion began at the end of the third week, with Israeli leaders vowing to 'wipe out' Hamas. Palestinian officials reported that at least 41,182 people had been killed and more than 95,280 injured at time of publication.

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) claimed that Hamas locations and infrastructure were targeted in the response. However, United Nations experts warned against 'collective punishment' for the people of Gaza, before predicting a 'humanitarian crisis' and then claimed that 'hell is settling in' for the region.
