Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that the western countries had called on Iran 'to be patient' and avoid reacting to the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, head of the Hamas political bureau. He pointed out that Israel 'instead of ending killings [of people] became more shameless.'

At a joint press conference in Doha with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani, Pezeshkian said: "We do not want war. It’s Israel that is forcing us to react.” He underscored that "no criminal in history committed their crimes and we were forced to respond and if they want to act in another way, we will give a stronger response."

Pezeshkian's remarks came a day after Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) launched spate of missiles towards Israel in response to the assassinations of Hezbollah's Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah and IRGC commander Abbas Nilforoshan in Lebanon, as well as the death of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.

The latest wave of Israeli airstrikes on Hezbollah targets began on September 23. The Lebanese Health Ministry reported 55 dead and 156 injured on Tuesday - and over 1,200 killed in total.

The Israeli military also announced a 'limited and targeted' ground incursion on Tuesday morning. On Wednesday, one soldier was reported killed in border battles. At the same time, Hezbollah said its fighters had clashed with Israeli soldiers on the outskirts of the villages of Maroun al-Ras, Udaysa and Yaroun.

Last Friday, a series of Israeli raids on the southern suburbs of Beirut killed Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah and a number of other senior commanders. Iran also launched a wave of airstrikes on Israel on Tuesday night, saying it was in response to the assassination of Nasrallah and others.

Tensions between Lebanon and Israel escalated in mid-September after the detonation of wireless devices used by Hezbollah, which killed dozens and injured thousands.

The Israeli army has been exchanging cross-border shelling with Hezbollah since the start of the Gaza war in October 2023.

The war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza broke out on October 7 after the Palestinian group launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200, according to Israeli officials.

In the Gaza Strip, Israel launched a large-scale response of airstrikes and a ground incursion. Palestinian officials reported that 41,689 people had been killed and more than 96,460 injured at the time of publication.
