Description

Pro-Palestinian demonstrators and members of Berlin’s police clashed during a protest in the German capital on Sunday, as hundreds gathered ahead of the first anniversary of the Hamas attack on southern Israel and start of the Gaza war.

Footage shows police officers making arrests as well as protesters carrying banners.

"Germany is not just not doing anything to stop the genocide," claimed one. "We see that in their foreign policy by sending arms and weapons to Israel."

The German government has backed Israel's right to defend itself. Last month, it denied claims that arms permits had been suspended, after the transfer of weaponry stalled amid a number of reported legal challenges.

Israel has strongly denied allegations of 'genocide', also made by a number of countries at the International Criminal Court, and says its actions in Gaza are in self-defence and against Hamas operatives and infrastructure.

The Israel-Hamas war began with the militant group's attack on southern Israel on October 7, 2023, and continues with the IDF's airstrikes and ground incursion in the enclave. Around 1,139 Israelis, mostly civilians, were killed in the initial assault, according to Israel - and around 200 taken hostage - while the ensuing Gaza war has led to around 42,000 deaths according to the Palestinian side.

A number of hostage-prisoner swaps have taken place, although talks to agree a permanent ceasefire have stalled. The conflict recently spread to Lebanon, where Israel launched a 'limited' ground incursion against militant group Hezbollah following a campaign of airstrikes. The sides have conducted cross-border strikes since the outbreak of the Gaza war.
