Visitors gathered at the 9/11 Memorial & Museum on Wednesday to pay tribute to the victims of the attack on the World Trade Centre (WTC) on September 11 2001.

The annual 'Tribute In Light' installation sent two huge beams of light into the New York City skyline to represent the fallen 'twin towers'.

Footage shows people laying flowers and American flags by the memorial pool at the museum, and embracing each other. Others can be seen photographing the city skyline with the twin beams of light rising above, from locations in Manhattan as well as across the Hudson River.

"We just walked 100 miles from central New Jersey through the night yesterday.. We just got here. We are military, we want to memorialise this," shared Ashley, one visitor. "It means a lot to us, especially when we get to see what we are actually fighting for and what happened that day," she added.

"It's important for me to be here every year so I can honour the people that I know and just make sure nobody forgets," added Nicole, a volunteer who assisted in identifying victims during the rescue and recovery operation following the attack.

"Especially today it seems like the whole world comes together, we forget our problems and remember everyone we lost," she continued.

The twin beams of the 'Tribute In Light' installation were assembled on the roof of the Battery Parking Garage south at the 9/11 Memorial. They are visible from a 60-mile radius around Lower Manhattan.

The tribute was first unveiled six months after 9/11 and subsequently takes place annually from night until dawn on September 11.

Over 2,500 people - as well as 19 hijackers - died when two passenger airliners were flown into the North and South towers of the WTC. 184 people were killed when a passenger airliner crashed into the Pentagon, the second largest office building in the world, near Washington DC. A further 44 people were killed when another hijacked plane crashed in Somerset County, Pennsylvania.

A total of 2,977 people were killed in the 9/11 attacks. Militant group Al Qaeda claimed responsibility, after which the US declared a 'War on Terror', launching the NATO invasion of Afghanistan and invading Iraq.
