Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan described 'strong ties of friendship and belief' with Niger as he held talks on energy and the fight against terrorism with Prime Minister Nigerien Ali Lamine Zeine on a visit to Niger on Wednesday.

"We have very strong ties of friendship and belief. And as representatives of our states, what we have to do is serve the interests of our states, our peoples, in the best possible way to see how our two countries can contribute at the highest level and look for opportunities to develop these relationships," said Fidan.

According to media reports, Ankara is seeking access to the country's uranium reserves, while Niger is hoping to secure more military backing.

"The challenges we face demand that we have all the resources we need to ensure our defence. And we know you're in a position to provide them since you're already doing so. I'd also like to help facilitate and improve cooperation with these industries," the PM stated.

Turkish National Defense Minister Yasar Guler, Energy and Natural Resources Minister Alparslan Bayraktar, National Intelligence Organisation chief Ibrahim Kalin, and other officials were also present at the meeting.

"Defence is why we have such a strong presence of senior officers here today. And when we visited your great country, we were pleasantly surprised to see the importance of industry and defence," Niger's PM added.
