Senator Marsha Blackburn said the US should support Taiwan’s push for independence, as she became the latest US politician to make an unannounced trip to Taipei, meeting with President Tsai Ing-wen in the capital on Thursday.
"It is important, indeed, that freedom-loving nations support Taiwan as they seek to preserve their independence and their freedom," said Blackburn. "We look forward to continuing to help and support Taiwan as they push forward as an independent nation."
Meanwhile, the president praised the politician for her support in Washington.
"Senator Blackburn is an important force of resolute support for Taiwan on Capitol Hill. Recently, she introduced legislation to bolster our backing for Taiwan to enhance our self-defence capabilities," said Tsai Ing-wen.
Blackburn’s trip is the third US visit since that of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi at the start of this month. A delegation headed by Senator Ed Markey touched down on August 14, while Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb also visited at the start of this week.
China repeatedly warned the US of 'counter-measures' ahead of Pelosi’s visit, conducting military drills around the island following that trip and the one led by Markey.
Beijing regards Taiwan as part of its territory under the 'One China' principle, while Taipei has never officially declared independence.
