Description

A pro-Palestine rally in Munich was met by Israel-supporting counter-demonstrators in Munich on Sunday, a day ahead of the anniversary of the October 7 Hamas attack and start of the Gaza war.

Footage shows protesters marching while carrying flags and signs reading: '365 days of Genocide', 'Countries that Israel bombs, Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Yemen - Self-defence?' and 'What if you were in Gaza?' among others. Police officers were seen keeping the demonstrations apart.

Israel has strongly denied allegations of 'genocide', also made by a number of countries at the International Criminal Court, and says its actions in Gaza are in self-defence and against Hamas operatives and infrastructure.

The Israel-Hamas war began with the militant group's attack on southern Israel and continues with the IDF's airstrikes and ground incursion in the enclave. Around 1,139 Israelis, mostly civilians, were killed in the initial assault, according to Israel - and around 200 taken hostage - while the ensuing Gaza war has led to over 40,000 deaths according to the Palestinian side.

A number of hostage-prisoner swaps have taken place, although talks to agree a permanent ceasefire have stalled. The conflict recently spread to Lebanon, where Israel launched a 'limited' ground incursion against militant group Hezbollah following a campaign of airstrikes. The sides have conducted cross-border strikes since the outbreak of the Gaza war.
