France beat the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) team in the men's volleyball final at the Tokyo 2020 Games on Saturday night to grab the nation's first Olympic gold medal in the sport.

Players and coaches from both sides spoke at a press conference in Tokyo on Sunday to share their impressions.

"We marked history. For us it will be something that's imprinted in our minds for life," said the French team's captain Benjamin Toniutti.

ROC player Igor Kobzar described his team's performance as 'positive.'

"Before going to the Olympic Games in Tokyo we were all dreaming of medals and we had great chances so that it would be of a different colour, of a higher value. However I appreciate what I have now," he commented.

Les Bleus took the first two sets 25-23, 25-17, but then ROC athletes managed to come back in the game, winning the next two frames 25-21, 25-21.

In a thriller tiebreak ROC volleyball players, who had advanced to the final after another comeback victory over the world's top-ranked Brazil, committed several crucial mistakes and lost 12-15, while their opponents burst into fierce celebrations for the sensational victory.

Outside hitter Earvin Ngapeth contribute the most to his team's win, scoring 26 points with 21 attacks, 2 blocks and 3 aces. Before Tokyo, France's best Olympic result in men's volleyball was their eighth place in 1988 in Seoul.
