Donald Trump claimed 'only consequential president get shot at' as he held his first rally since a second apparent assassination attempt, speaking at a town hall event in Flint, Michigan on Tuesday.

'You wonder why I get shot at, right? You know, only consequential presidents get shot at," Trump stated. "This is a dangerous business, so we have to keep it safe."

He also said that he had had 'very nice' calls with President Joe Biden and his opponent Kamala Harris following the incident, having previously accused them this week of inflammatory rhetoric.

Trump also spoke about climate change, claiming that it could be a 'good thing' and contrasted the risks with those of a global conflict.

"We have countries that have tremendous nuclear power," he said. "The ocean is going to rise in 400 years, an eighth of an inch and you'll have more seafront property, right? If that happens, I said, is that good or bad? I said, isn't that a good thing? If I have a little property on the ocean, I have a little bit more property. I have a little bit more ocean," he said. "But the fact is that it's a, it's a tremendous problem and we are closer to World War II today than we've ever been."

The Republican candidate hit back at media claims that he 'rambled' in his speeches.

"The fake news likes to say, oh, he was rambling. No, no, that's not rambling. That's genius. When you can connect the dots you got. Now, now [moderator] Sarah [Huckabee Sanders], if you couldn't connect the dots, you got a problem. But every dot was connected and many stories were told in that little paragraph."

The recent attempt on Trump's life, a second in just nine weeks, occurred at the former president's golf course in Palm Beach, Florida, on Sunday. The suspect, pro-Ukraine activist Ryan Wesley Routh, has been charged with two gun-related offences.

Trump takes on Harris in the 2024 presidential election on November 5.
