Description

The highly anticipated final of the first edition of the African eSports Championships (AEC24) kicked off on Wednesday at the Mohammed V Sports Complex in Casablanca.

Footage shows tournament participants focused on their computer screens, with their hands glued to mice and keyboards in the fight for the eSports crown, as the audience watches on. The winning team and runners-up can be seen being awarded their prizes on stage.

"Morocco is proud to host this tournament, Africa's first ever Electronic Games Championship with qualification for the World Cup. This is a global precedent since previous competitions were held virtually or online, with no interactive engagement," said the President of the Royal Federation of Electronic Games of Morocco, Hicham al-Khlifi.

Participants paid their respects to the 'powerful' performances of their opponents. A member of the winning team, Protea Female Counter Strike 2 Esports Team, described the tournament as 'amazing' and praised the 'radiating' atmosphere at AEC24.

"It is so fun to be here. I feel a real South African, and every African should be part of this, and it is so amazing to be here. I feel the competition level is out of this world. I have never seen anything like this," she said.

"It is a great honour, we seek to be 100 per cent present here and exert our utmost efforts," a Tunisian team member added. "We are well-prepared at all levels. God willing, luck will be on our side. We will make every effort to honour the Arab, Morocco, and African countries."

Mind Sports South Africa’s (MSSA) Protea Female Counter Strike 2 Esports Team reportedly delivered victory in a tight match with Tunisia to scoop the title of AEC24 champions. The winners are expected to represent Africa at the World eSports Championships in Riyadh this November.

180 players from 17 countries flocked to Morocco’s largest city to take part in five categories: CS2 Open, CS2 Women, MLBB Open, MLBB Women, and PubG Mobile, of the tournament which was held from August 16 to 21.
