The '7 Wonders Day' event kicked off in the ancient Jordanian city on Sunday to celebrate the 17th anniversary of Petra being named one of the New Seven Wonders of the world.

Footage shows the historic and archaeological city illuminated by lanterns during a nighttime event, as visitors take photographs at the main archaeological route through the city, which is partially built into the rock.

"It is an incredible historic achievement that we must celebrate every year. In fact, we call it '7 Wonders Day', on July 7 of every year," shared Jean-Paul de la Fuente, Director of the N7W Foundation and Head of Value Development.

"Petra has been chosen in this historic vote to be one of the New Seven Wonders of the World along with six other incredible locations in China's Great Wall, the Taj Mahal, the Colosseum in Rome, Christ Redeemer in Brazil, Chichen Itza in Mexico, and Machu Picchu in Peru. Together, they make the New 7 Wonders of the World," de la Fuente added.

"For Petra and Jordan, this is an incredible platform and opportunity to develop the social economy around tourism but not just tourism, it is about national identity, national branding, national pride, and healthy positive pride in creating opportunity from this," de la Fuente added.

"We are looking forward to revitalising the traditional markets of Petra and Jordan," said Fares Braizat,

In his turn, the chief commissioner of the Petra Development and Tourism Region Authority, Fares Braizat, noted that ambassadors from traditional markets such as China and others that are "attempting to attract" other markets like the Indian, Malaysian, and Indonesian are welcome in the region.

Archaeologists believe that Petra dates back to 312 BC and is one of the oldest cities in the world. Every year, it attracts millions of visitors and was voted as one of the "7 New Wonders of the World" in a 2007 poll involving 100 million people.
