Description

Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg was seen at a pro-Palestine and Lebanon march in Berlin on Monday, as clashes broke out between protesters and police.

Footage shows Thunberg wearing a pink face covering and traditional Arabic keffiyeh. Protesters also chanted 'Stop the genocide' and 'You will see, you will see, Palestine will be free', while a number were seen being detained by law enforcement officers.

The related chant 'From the River to the Sea' was banned in November 2023 by interior minister, Nancy Faeser, who called it a 'Hamas slogan'. The land between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea includes both Israel and the Palestinian territories, and the phrase has a number of different interpretations.

According to local reports, Berlin authorities mobilised approximately 500 police officers to manage the protests, which took place on the anniversary of the October 7 attack.

Pro-Palestinian and pro-Israel rallies were held around the world marking the 2023 October 7 Hamas attacks on southern Israel, and the start of the Gaza war.

Around 1,139 Israelis, mostly civilians, were killed in the initial assault, according to Israel - and around 200 taken hostage - while the ensuing Gaza conflict has led to nearly 42,000 deaths according to the Palestinian side. The hostilities recently spread to Lebanon, as Israel launched airstrikes and a ground incursion against Hezbollah.
