Description

An eyewitness recounted the moment of an Israeli airstrike on the al-Mawasi refugee camp in Khan Younis, with dozens reported to have been killed, displaced and missing.

Footage shows a large crater, with burnt-out tents and loaves of bread on the ground, while people attempted to locate their personal belongings.

"Around 01:00 at night, we were sleeping when F-16 missiles suddenly hit the camp in Khan Younis, a 'safe place'. Many martyrs remain buried underneath the ground. It is an appalling scene. People were sleeping in their tents made from nothing more than a sheet, which offers no protection,” said displaced person Mouatez al-Helu.

“They say the resistance militants are here, where are they? They said 'go to al-Mawasi in Khan Younis'. Where are we supposed to go?" he added.

According to media reports, the al-Mawasi area was designated a 'safe zone' for refugees.

Local media reported that five rockets fell, leaving craters up to nine metres deep. Gaza’s Civil Defence said that up to 40 were killed and dozens of tents destroyed.

The IDF reported in a statement that its air force had "struck significant Hamas terrorists who were operating within a command and control centre embedded inside the Humanitarian Area in Khan Younis."

Hamas condemned the strike in a statement, declaring that "allegations that gunmen existed in the targeted area is a clear lie that aims to justify these appalling crimes."

Hamas-Israel war broke out after Hamas launched an attack on southern Israel on October 7, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200 and held in Gaza.

In the enclave, the IDF conducted a large-scale campaign of air strikes and ground incursions, killing at least 40,988 Palestinians and injuring more than 94,825 at the time of publication.
