Chinese President Xi Jinping warned against the ‘interference of external forces’ over the Taiwan issue and said that China will ‘never promise to renounce the use of force’ at the opening ceremony of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China in Beijing on Sunday.
“We adhere to the party's overall strategy for solving the Taiwan issue in the new era, and unswervingly advance the great cause of national reunification,” the Chinese leader said. “But, we will never promise to renounce the use of force and reserve the option of taking all necessary measures. This is directed solely at the interference of external forces.”
Tensions between China, Taiwan and the United States reached boiling point this summer after US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taipei. The visit drew strong condemnation from Beijing, who launched a series of war games across the Strait.
The Communist Party Congress is held every five years in Beijing’s Great Hall of the People. The event is organised to set the policy agenda for the years ahead and appoint new party leaders. Nearly 2,298 delegates attended the event, according to reports.
Xi Jinping is poised to secure a third term as the party's general secretary. Delegates will hold a ceremonial vote on Xi’s ‘work report’ at the end of the Congress on October 22.
