Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant called Iran the 'greatest threat to the future of the world' and urged Washington to work together to prevent Tehran from 'possessing nuclear weapons', speaking at meeting with US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin Arlington, Monday.

"We are working closely together to achieve an agreement, but we must also discuss readiness for every possible scenario. The greatest threat to the future of the world and the future of our region is Iran, and time is running out. Now is the time to realise the commitment of American administrations over the years to promise to prevent Iran from possessing nuclear weapons," Gallant stated.

He went on to express his gratitude to the US and Austin personally for the support shown since the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7, and called for deepening ties 'in the face of attacks' on the global arena.

"Today, we are at the crossroad, and that will impact the entire Middle East. I am here to discuss the ways to achieve our common goals, assuring the security of the state of Israel and projecting the powerful ties between our countries. In Gaza, we must work together to ensure the return of 120 hostages, with no exception. We must end the terrorist regime of Hamas," he said.

Gallant's visit to the US to meet with the country’s top officials for talks over the conflicts with Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon came as the situation on the Israeli border with Lebanon worsened last month after an Israeli airstrike killed a senior Hezbollah military commander.

The war in Gaza has been lasting for nine months after Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel on October 7, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200, according to Israeli officials.

Israel declared war on the group and a 'complete siege' of Gaza, with a large-scale campaign of air strikes. A ground incursion began at the end of the third week, with Israeli leaders vowing to 'wipe out' Hamas. Palestinian officials reported that at least 37,626 people had been killed and more than 86,098 injured, at the time of publication.

The IDF claimed that Hamas locations and infrastructure were targeted in the response. However, United Nations experts warned against 'collective punishment' for the people of Gaza before predicting a 'humanitarian crisis' and then claimed that 'hell is settling in' for the region.
