Fans gathered outside the gates of the Olympic Village in Tokyo on Monday to bid farewell to athletes and exchange badge pins, following the end of the 2020 Paralympic Games.

"I really enjoyed watching the Paralympic events and I was quite sad last night that it was ending and it was over," one fan said.

"I did not realise until the Olympics were over, that people were doing this whole pin trading thing, but since then, something about three weeks, I have been collecting free pins," she added.

Buses left the Olympic Village at intervals to take athletes to the airport.

This year's postponed 2020 Paralympic Games saw a record 86 teams win medals and 62 teams win at least one gold medal. China led the medal table with 207 medals, including 96 golds.
