Description

Activists and members of congress urged for Washington DC statehood and voting rights reform on the anniversary of the Capitol riots, as seen on Thursday in Washington DC.

Crowds gathered with placards to mark the anniversary, with performers singing songs on stage.

"We have a choice to make, as Americans. January 6th can either mark the end of our democracy or the beginning of our march towards the expansion of rights and justice and equity and fairness for all, and I choose the latter," said Texas representative Veronica Escobar.

Scenes of chaos emerged from the US Washington DC Capitol after supporters of US President Donald Trump descended on Congress following a 'Save America' march on January 06 last year. The protest took place on the same day the US Congress was formally certifying the electoral college votes, confirming Joe Biden as the next President of the United States.

Supporters stormed the Capitol, clashing violently with law enforcement before the national guard was mobilised. Five people, including a Capitol police officer, died during the storming.
