Pennsylvania representative in Congress Mike Kelly stated that 'It’s time for America to wake up' hours after a gunman shot US presidential candidate Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Butler on Saturday.
"We have truly become a third world country when we don't like the opposition we're running against, eliminate them," he continued. "Look, if you don't want to vote for him, don't vote for him. There's no reason for anything like this to happen, especially not in America, not in the cradle of freedom."
The representative, who claimed to be about 60 ft from where the former president was shot, went on to say that the experience was 'so surreal', adding that "nobody would have ever expected this to happen."
Trump was shot to his right ear when he was delivering his speech in the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday. As rows of shots fired, the candidate ducked behind his lectern and was surrounded by bodyguards before being taken out of the venue, while raising his fist into the air.
The alleged gunman was killed by the US Secret Service agents. Another attendee was also reported dead in the rally, with two others in critical condition.
Following the incident, President Joe Biden made his statements in a speech in Rehoboth Beach, calling it 'sick' and condemning the violent act, while also saying that he had 'tried to get a hold of Donald.'
Other US politicians like the former president Barack Obama and Secretary of States Antony Blinken also commented on the shooting, condemning political violence and sending wishes to Trump.
The case is currently being investigated as a possible assassination attempt, according to law enforcement officials.
