Description

Thousands of supporters of incoming President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo gathered at Zocalo Square in Mexico City on Tuesday for her inauguration ceremony.

Footage shows people chanting 'It's an honour to be with Claudia today!' with others wearing 'Claudia masks', waving flags and carrying banners.

"It is time for women," said Blanca Contreras. "I love that she is very firm and always looks out for the people, the population, and women. So, I feel that she is going to be a very good president."

Sheinbaum is the first female president in the country's 200-year history.

"She should be a good president and help us, the poor," said another supporter, Antonia Guerrero.

"Being a woman, she may see other problems in society," added Alberto Hernandez Espinoza. "Obviously, [outgoing president] Andres Manuel fought against some economic, political, and social situations and I think that Claudia is going to do a little better."

"We must always hope for the best because that is why we elected her, right?" he asked.

Sheinbaum, a protege of her predecessor, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, won the presidential election on June 2 by a landslide, taking around 61 percent of the vote. Her nearest challenger Xochitl Galvez received 28 percent of the vote.
