Description

Pro-Palestine protesters took to the streets of New York City on Monday to protest the war in Gaza and call for an immediate ceasefire. The rally was a show of solidarity with Palestine as Israel-Hamas war entered its second year.

Footage shows protesters violently clashing with police while law enforcement officers are making several arrests. During the rally people were also seen carrying signs reading: 'Gaza one year of genocide, One year of resistance,' 'If I must die, u must live to tell the story' among others.

According to media reports, the protest was organised by a pro-Palestine group called 'Within Our Lifetime' (WOL). The group used social media to ask New Yorkers to "stand with Gaza and support the Palestinian people fighting against genocide in any way possible."

Monday's anniversary of the October 7 Hamas attacks saw memorials, protests and rally take place around the world. Around 1,139 Israelis, mostly civilians, were killed in the assault on southern Israel, with around 200 taken hostage, according to the Israeli side. It led to Israel's campaign of airstrikes and ground incursion into Gaza, which has resulted in nearly 42,000 deaths according to Palestinian officials.

Tensions also escalated with Hezbollah last month, with Israel launching a campaign of airstrikes in southern Lebanon, as well as a ground incursion at the start of last week. Those airstrikes had killed over 2,000 people, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry at time of publication, and saw thousands flee the region.
