100 chess players from various countries had joined the Blitz Chess Marathon in northern Morocco's city of Tetouan on Saturday in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the most number of matches held in 24 hours.

Footage shows the competition being organised at the Tetouan Centre for Modern Art, where the contestants were seen playing their matches in immersed concentration. Following the games, an award ceremony was also held, where the winners were granted with prizes and applauded by the audience.

"The goal is to break the Guinness World Record for the number of matches in 24 official hours. Tomorrow, God willing, we will have a symposium, then a real-time match in which 100 male and female players will participate against an international champion," shared Muhammad Amin Fazzari, manager of the marathon.

"We hope that this initiative will contribute to spreading chess at the local, national and international levels, and of course in celebration of the centenary of the International Federation," he added.

The competition gathered the participation of several well-known Moroccan and international chess masters, and had been a great joy for the contestants.

"It is really wonderful and amazing. I have been here last year and there were 18 rounds and I really enjoyed the tournament. I am sure it will be even better this year," said Salima Adzinova, an 11-year-old chess player from Russia.

"I came for the first time to Tetouan. We played the first round, and I can say that the hall and the conditions of the game are distinguished, because it is the first or only time that a chess match has been organised in Morocco in a place like this," added Jacques Elbilia, a Moroccan chess master.

July 20 also marks the International Chess Day and the 100-year foundation of the World Chess Federation (FIDE), and chess federations across the globe had attempted to break the World Guinness Record for the most matches played within 24 hours.

The 2024 Blitz Chess Marathon in Tetouan is the second edition of the tournament, with the first being won by Moroccan chess master Yasser Al-Hajj Al-Khalti.
