On May 25, 2020, Floyd died after former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin pinned him to the ground with a knee on his neck for more than nine minutes. Chauvin was convicted in April of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter following a three-week trial. Three other former officers are still awaiting trial in the case.
