General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, head of Sudan's military, arrived in Port Sudan on Sunday, on his first visit to the coastal city since the armed conflict between the army and the rival paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) broke out in Khartoum in mid-April.
It also marked Burhan’s second stop since leaving Khartoum, after visiting the northern River Nile state.
The general has reportedly been stationed in his army headquarters in the Sudanese capital since the conflict began, and his public appearance triggered speculation of a potential political settlement between the warring parties.
Around 4,000 people have been reportedly killed in Sudan since the fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the RSF began in April, according to official figures.
About 3.9 million people have been displaced both inside and outside the African country, according to the UN migration agency.
A military council has run the country since a coup in 2021, with ongoing tensions between Burhan and RSF leader General 'Hemedti' Mohamed Hamdan Dagolo over the country’s direction, the integration of the RSF into the army, and the planned transition to civilian rule.
