Guatemalan Foreign Minister Mario Bucaro pledged his country’s support for Taiwan, while meeting with the island’s President Tsai Ing-wen in Taipei on Tuesday.
"Guatemala will always support Taiwan, because we have a firm conviction on the principles of peace, sovereignty and territorial integrity," Bucaro said.
Taiwan’s president thanked the foreign minister, whose country is one of only 14 in the world to maintain formal diplomatic relations with Taipei.
"In the face of the continued expansion of global authoritarianism at this time, our allies on the democratic front should continue to cooperate in order to maintain regional peace and stability and protect the way of life of freedom and democracy," she said.
Also on Tuesday, China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs warned Guatemala against supporting the administration. Beijing views Taiwan as part of its territory under the 'One China Principle', while Taipei has never officially declared independence.
