Description

Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in the Dutch city of Amstelveen on Sunday in a show of solidarity with Israel ahead of the first anniversary of the October 7 Hamas offensive.

Footage shows crowds draped in Israeli flags in the city centre, where they listened to a series of speeches from activist leaders, local politicians and a survivor from the Nova festival.

Demonstrators are shown placing candles on the pavement, while mock corpses representing deceased Israeli hostages are seen inside a replica of a Hamas tunnel.

"We want to unite and show that we are people that we want to live in peace in the region," an activist said.

"I think there is a lack of solidarity for the Israelis and the Jews, and that's the reason why I'm here," added a second.

The rally dubbed 'Together for Israel' was organised by the Center for Information and Documentation Israel (CIDI) in collaboration with other Jewish organisations in the Netherlands.

It comes almost one year after Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel on Saturday, October 7, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200, according to Israeli officials.

Israel responded with airstrikes on the Gaza Strip and issued a formal declaration of war on Hamas, warning residents to leave their homes. Israel declared war on the group and a 'complete siege' of Gaza with a large-scale campaign of air strikes.

A ground incursion began at the end of the third week, with Israeli leaders vowing to 'wipe out' Hamas. Palestinian officials reported that at least 41,870 people had been killed and more than 97,166 injured at the time of publication.

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) claimed that Hamas locations and infrastructure were targeted in the response. However, United Nations experts warned against 'collective punishment' for the people of Gaza before predicting a 'humanitarian crisis' and then claimed that 'hell is settling in' for the region.
