The Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Lieutenant General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, received the new Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Sudan, Hassan Shah Hosseini, in Port Sudan on Monday.

"I came to Sudan based on our joint decision to develop relations and exchange ambassadors. Today, I am pleased to have presented my credentials to the esteemed Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council of Sudan," said Ambassador Hassan Shah Hosseini.

The event was attended by the Secretary-General of the Sovereignty Council, Lieutenant General Mohamed Al-Ghali Ali Youssef, and the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Hussein Al-Amin.

“The Chairman of the Transitional Sovereignty Council welcomed the ambassador and affirmed the strong relations between the two countries, stating that the presentation of the ambassador's credentials marks the beginning of a new phase in the relations between our countries," explained Hussein Al-Amin.

The move comes as fighting continues between the warring Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Iran reportedly supported Sudan by supplying drones in contravention of a UN arms embargo. Media reports claimed that Sudan recently rejected Iranian proposals to build a permanent naval base or station an Iranian helicopter carrier in Port Sudan, however negotiations are said to be ongoing regarding a potential defence cooperation agreement.

Saudi Arabia was engaged in mediation efforts starting last May. While several truces were brokered, both sides accused each other of breaching the agreements and mediation efforts under the Jeddah Platform umbrella were suspended in October 2023.

Saudi Deputy Foreign Minister Walid bin Abdul Karim Al-Khuraiji met with Sudanese leader Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan in Port Sudan on July 8th to discuss the resumption of Saudi-backed negotiations to end the civil war.

Sudan has been experiencing severe turmoil since fighting broke out between the army and RSF in April 2023, resulting in the deaths of around 15,000 people, according to the United Nations.

The conflict has forced more than 8 million people to flee their homes, including 1.8 million who have left the country, making Sudan the country with the highest displacement rates globally, according to the International Organization for Migration.
