Description

The aftermath of a huge fire was seen at the Gazi tyre factory in Dhaka on Tuesday. Footage shows the building still smouldering as well as destroyed machinery and debris. The fire itself broke out on Sunday.

According to reports, factory officials claimed hundreds of people stormed the building and looted the site, shortly after the arrest of the owner of the building, former Awami League textile minister Golam Dastagir Gazi.

"My son [Osman] is 10 years old, the child that went with him must have been around 10-12 years old. They were told by one of the locals that there was a fire in Gazi's mill (factory), and they should go and grab things," said one mother. "They are only children, they don’t understand what they are doing…The child that went with my son is alive and my son is missing."

The fire began at around 21:00 local time. The Fire Service said that it had 175 names of people relatives had claimed were missing, Gazi's arrest followed reports of a crackdown on those in the government of ousted PM Sheikh Hasina.
