Description

Voters were seen heading to polling stations to elect their local Members of Parliament and choose the UK's next government on Thursday in London.

During the first parliamentary election in the country since 2019, voters in each of the 650 constituencies elect an MP to represent them in the House of Commons.

Under the United Kingdom's parliamentary system, if a party gets a majority in the House of Commons - at least 326 seats - it can form a government, with the leader becoming the prime minister.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak called the snap election in May. Polling stations for this year's UK general election are open from 07:00 to 22:00 local time, while the results are expected throughout Thursday night and into Friday.
