Description

Hundreds of members of the Palestinian diaspora gathered in Santiago, Chile, calling on President Gabriel Boric to take 'concrete actions' to sever diplomatic ties with Israel ahead of the first anniversary of the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.

Footage received on Saturday shows protesters marching towards La Moneda while waving Lebanese and Israeli flags and holding banners reading 'only way to find peace is establishment of State of Palestine' and 'stop the slaughter of innocent Palestine'.

Protesters also unfurled a large canvas banner over a building, calling for the closure of the Israeli embassy in Santiago.

"When things happen in Israel, attacks, all the media are there reporting and the entire community of countries and Western governments support it, and yet hundreds of thousands of innocent people die in Palestine, in Lebanon today and they don't care," said Gabriela Venegas, Member Latino Palestinian Community. "That is to say, the lives of certain people in the world are worth much less than the lives of the West and international laws only apply to European countries and Western countries," she continued.

"This has offended the conscience of all peoples, and all peoples, not only Chile but all peoples of the world are protesting exactly the same situation. A criminal state, a state killing women, children, supported by the North American empire and shameful fawns like the United Kingdom and France," said Palestinian community member Nicolas Hadwa.

Similar protests in support of Palestine and Lebanon took place across the world on Saturday, as part of International Day of Action, to stand in solidarity with civilians in Gaza.

The war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza broke out on October 7 after the Palestinian group launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200, according to Israeli officials.

Israel launched a large-scale response, with airstrikes and a ground incursion into Gaza. Palestinian officials reported that 41,534 people had been killed and more than 96,092 injured at the time of publication.
