Description

US Vice President Kamala Harris swore in three new Senators as control of the upper chamber switched over to the Democrats, in Washington DC on Wednesday.

Harris, herself newly sworn in as US vice president, took the oaths of senators Raphael Warnock, Alex Padilla, and Jon Ossoff in a short ceremony on the floor of the Senate.

The confirmation means the Democrats now have control of the upper house for the first time since 2014. Harris wields the deciding vote with the chamber split 50/50 between Democrats and Republicans.

Padilla, the successor to Harris' old Senate seat, became California's first Latino senator. New senators Rev. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff took the oath at the same time following their run-off victories in Georgia. Warnock becomes the first Black senator from that state while Ossoff becomes its first Jewish senator.
