Description

Residents of the al-Mawasi camp in Khan Younis were seen grieving for the relatives and friends, and holding funeral prayers on Tuesday, following a deadly strike overnight.

“My daughter was killed, my wife and this child were injured, and the area was completely destroyed," said Raed Muammar. "A short while ago, I was in the area; what's left is just remains rather than actual tents…. Mawasi in Khan Younis… are humanitarian areas and meant to be safe."

Footage shows families at the Nasser Medical Hospital, with one father carrying his injured daughter. Other people are shown praying, before transporting the bodies for burial.

"We were sleeping when all of a sudden, after midnight, we woke up to the sounds of explosions and fires all around us. We don't know if this is real or a dream; we don't know who survived and who was buried," added another local, Mahmoud.

Gaza's Civil Defence reported at up to 40 people were killed. According to media reports, the area of Khan Younis was a designated 'humanitarian zone'.

The IDF reported that its air force had "struck significant Hamas terrorists who were operating within a command and control centre embedded inside the Humanitarian Area in Khan Younis".

Hamas condemned the strike in a statement, declaring that "allegations that gunmen existed in the targeted area is a clear lie that aims to justify these appalling crimes."

The Saudi, Egyptian, and Turkish Foreign Ministries also denounced the attack.

The latest hostilities in Gaza began in October 2023, after Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200, according to Israeli officials.

In the enclave, the IDF launched a large-scale campaign of airstrikes and ground incursions, killing at least 41,020 Palestinians and injuring more than 94,925 others as of the time of publication.
