Description

Displaced families driven from their homes by fighting in eastern Sudan's Sennar are seeking refuge in the construction sites of unfinished buildings, as seen in footage captured in Gedaref State on Sunday.

"We are in an exposed area with rain and cold weather. We live here with the children. My uncle was with me, and he passed away here yesterday," a refugee said.

"We moved from Jabal Moya after the Rapid Support Forces came," added a second. "We had children with us; some were just days old, some were a week old."

In early July, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) announced that they had taken control of large areas in Sennar State in southeastern Sudan, including the state capital, Singa City, Dinder and Suki.

While the Sudanese army has not confirmed whether these areas have fallen under RSF control, it has stated that it "continues to fight with steadfastness and high morale."

Sudan has been experiencing severe turmoil since fighting broke out between the army and RSF in April 2023, resulting in the deaths of approximately 15,000 people, according to the United Nations.

The conflict has forced more than 8 million people to flee their homes, including 1.8 million who have left the country, making Sudan the country with the highest displacement rates globally, according to the International Organization for Migration.
