Description

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Wang Wenbin claimed that US 'inaction' following the Nord Stream pipelines attacks was 'really puzzling', during his media briefing in Beijing on Tuesday.

"The inaction of the United States on the Nord Stream blast is really puzzling," he said. "What is the reason for the US side to remain silent? What is the secret of the Nord Stream incident to the United States?"

"I think the United States owes the international community an explanation for these questions," he continued.

It came after the Washington Post claimed last week that the Biden administration had prior knowledge of a planned attack on the pipelines by Ukraine, up to three months before the explosions last September.

Wang Wenbin also contrasted the US reaction with its swift response in Syria in 2011, following allegations of human rights abuses.

"The US side completed a set of actions from investigation to sanctions in just one week," he added.

Kiev has strongly denied any involvement in the blasts. The White House itself was also implicated earlier this year, following an article by journalist Seymour Hersh who alleged that explosives were planted on Biden’s orders. The White House called it 'utterly false and total fiction'.

Asked about reports on Monday that the US was preparing to evacuate citizens in Taiwan, Wang Wenbin said he did 'not know the relevant situation you mentioned’.

"However, what I do know is that when the US side talks about standing up with Taiwan, what it really does is use Taiwan as pawns and cannon fodder," he claimed.

China has repeatedly accused Washington of interfering in its internal affairs, regarding the Taiwan as part of its own territory under the 'One China' principle. Washington has insisted its dealings with Taipei are consistent with its own 'One China' policy.

While discussing US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s statement that former president Donald Trump didn’t do enough to counter China intelligence, following US claims that Beijing had a spy base in Cuba, the spokesperson described it as 'old' and 'staged'.

"This is just another old drama staged by the United States, which is familiar to the world. We hope that the US side will reflect on itself, stop spreading rumours and smear, and stop the act of massive and indiscriminate eavesdropping on various countries," he said.
