Description

A collection of some of the rarest, most sought-after trading cards is on display at an exhibition in New York City, ahead of the 'Holy Grails' auction on Tuesday.

Footage captured on Monday shows exhibits from the collection in spinning displays, including dual logo patches of NBA legends Michael Jordan and Julius Irving, rare Pokemon cards, as well as cards of monumental baseball players like Roberto Clemente, Henry Aaron and Mickey Mantle.

Co-hosted by fine arts auctioneer Sotheby's and online retailer Fanatics Collect, up to 40 of the 'grails' could be sold for hundreds of thousands of dollars per card.

Brahm Wachter, Sotheby's Head of Modern Collectibles shared his insight into the upcoming sale.

"We have a Michael Jordan and Julius Irving exclusive collection, dual logo man card, which means it has two logo man patches that were game-used by each athlete, and it's signed by them both as well. That we're expecting could achieve as much as a million dollars, but of course there is also Pokemon cards here that have bids on them already of over a hundred thousand dollars," he said. "The most valuable Pokemon card we're estimating should achieve in excess of $500,000."

Wachter shared his thoughts on why the auction has been greeted with such excitement.

"I think they represent a lot of people's childhoods. For me, one of my fondest memories as a kid was breaking open packs of cards with my dad, and I think so many people feel the same way," he shared.

"I think when those people get older and achieve success, what do they want? They want that same card they broke open as a kid, but this time in perfect condition, so really this is just a celebration of that," he continued.

The online bidding for the most coveted trading cards had been open since September 10. The exhibition of the cards was held on Monday and Tuesday at the deconsecrated Harlem Parish, followed by the live auction that will begin at 19:30 EDT on Tuesday.
