Description

Heavily damaged buildings and huge piles of rubble were seen at Gaza's Al-Shifa hospital complex on Monday, after Israeli forces withdrew from the area following a two-week operation.

Footage shows extensive destruction to the hospital - in particular, the Specialist Surgery Building - as well as the surrounding area, with locals and emergency workers assessing the damage.

“Since dawn until this moment, we have been transporting the wounded outside the hospital. You can see the scale of destruction and the huge number of injuries,” said Maher Al-Ajrami, a medic.

Injured people can be seen being carried on stretchers, and a body is also shown being moved, wrapped in a white sheet.

According to the Palestinian news agency WAFA, Israeli Defence Forces 'destroyed entire floors' of the surgery block and 'burnt the reception and emergency departments' as well as the kidney, maternity, cancer and other facilities, adding that 'scores' of people were killed inside and around the facility.

The IDF released a statement saying that Israeli forces and the Security Agency (Shabak) “concluded a targeted operation inside Al-Shifa Hospital before withdrawing from the area."

"The Israeli troops killed several terrorists in close combat and found weapons and intelligence documents in the facility, without harming civilians, patients, and medical crews," it added.

Palestinian militant group Hamas said in a statement the action 'proves the nature of this rogue fascist entity who defies the values of civilisation and humanity, and whose crimes and violations exceeded all limits. Its mission is clear and ongoing'.

“We hold the US administration and President Biden fully responsible for the crimes, massacres, and systematic destruction of civilian life in Gaza, especially the health sector and hospitals. This destruction is being carried out using American weapons and backed up with political and military support,” it added.

The US has repeatedly defended Israel's right to defend itself but last week refused to veto a resolution calling for a 'lasting, sustainable ceasefire' in Gaza during Ramadan. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said it marked a 'clear retreat' from the previous position and would hurt its efforts against Hamas as well as efforts to free the hostages.

Hamas has been designated a ‘terrorist group’ by Israel and some key allies including the US and EU.

Fighting between Israel and Hamas continues for the sixth month in Gaza after Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel on October 7, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200, according to Israeli officials.

Israel declared war on the group and a 'complete siege' of Gaza, with a large-scale campaign of air strikes. A ground incursion began at the end of the third week, with Israeli leaders vowing to 'wipe out' Hamas. Palestinian officials reported that 32,845 people had been killed and more than 75,392 injured at the time of publication.

The IDF has repeatedly stated that it is targeting Hamas locations and infrastructure in the enclave United Nations experts warned against 'collective punishment' for the people of Gaza, before predicting a 'humanitarian crisis' and then claimed that 'hell is settling in' for the region.
