Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei described the October 7 Hamas attacks on Israel as a 'legitimate act', as he paid tribute to the late Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, during a rare address at Friday prayers in Tehran on Friday.
“Al-Aqsa flood, at this time last year, was a legitimate and natural act that is the right of the Palestinian people,” Khamenei stated, with the traditional rifle by his side.
“I decided to honour my brother, my dear and proud brother, the beloved figure in the Islamic world, the eloquent tongue of the nations of the region and the shining jewel of Lebanon, His Eminence Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, may God's mercy be upon him, at the Friday prayers in Tehran,” he continued.
The Supreme Leader addressed the Lebanese people, as well as Hezbollah and the Amal Movement (Lebanese political party) saying: “redouble your endeavours and capabilities, strengthen your pursuit, resist and thwart the aggressor enemy to strengthen your faith and reliance.”
Iran launched a wave of missile attacks on Israel on Tuesday, which it said was in retaliation for the deaths of the Nasrallah and Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) commander Major General Abbas Nilforoushan in an airstrike in Beirut on Friday, as well as the killing of Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran in July.
Khamenei previously vowed to respond to Haniyeh's assassination - which Israel has never commented on - and criticised Nasrallah's assassination, saying that “the fate of this region will be decided by the resistance forces, led by Hezbollah.”
His address comes just days before the anniversary of the October 7 attack when Hamas launched an unprecedented assault on southern Israel, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200 according to Israeli officials. Israel launched a subsequent campaign of airstrikes and ground incursion into Gaza, which is ongoing, and has killed over 40,00 according to the Palestinian side.
