Description

Thousands of people flocked to Haridwar on Sunday to take a dip in the Ganges, purify their bodies and minds, and celebrate the birth of the Goddess Ganga, as part of the Ganga Dussehra festival.

"Today is the festival of Ganga Dussehra. We have come from Delhi. Bathing on the festival of Gangadhar liberates one from sins," said Parmeet, a tourist.

Ganga Dussehra is one of the most important festivals for Hindus, dedicated entirely to the worship of the Goddess Ganga, the Hindu personification of the Ganges River.

"Today Ganga Ji has come to earth, so today is the festival of Ganga Dussehra. This is a very holy festival and by taking a bath in it, many sins are washed away and many good deeds are achieved," said another tourist, Bhuvnesh.

This day is said to commemorate the descent of the Goddess Ganga to earth. Known by many names, Ganga is often depicted as a fair and beautiful woman riding a divine creature called the Makara, often depicted as resembling a crocodile.
