Rescuers from the Red Crescent organisation can be seen carrying bodies at the site of the helicopter crash which killed President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and others, in East Azerbaijan province on Monday.

Footage shows the team lifting and moving a stretcher through the dense undergrowth.

According to reports, the US-made Bell 212 helicopter came down in the mountains in northern Iran during heavy fog. No official cause has been reported at time of publication.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei declared five days of national mourning. First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber will take over as acting president for an interim period, with elections scheduled after 50 days. Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani becomes acting foreign minister.

Condolences came from the leaders of Russia, India, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria, Egypt and others. Raisi, a conservative cleric seen as close to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was elected in 2021.
