Hundreds of cat lovers and their furry friends gathered at the Shanghai Museum for a very special party and showing of the latest exhibition - 'On Top of the Pyramid: The Civilisation of Ancient Egypt' - on Saturday.

Footage features cats of many breeds and sizes sitting in carriers, with some dressed as ancient Egyptian pharaohs and gods.

"I think it's a rare opportunity to come here and see a lot of kittens and a lot of friendly people," said one cat owner. "It feels it's a good atmosphere."

Another added that she was impressed how prepared people were, with lots of supplies for their cats including special 'pee pads' and comforters.

While 'cat worship' in ancient Egypt is a myth, they were believed to be magical creatures, with deities believed to take on their form and many gods depicted with feline heads.

The event is one of 10 such parties thrown over the summer months, with all 200 tickets for each reportedly selling out within an hour. According to organisers, the exhibition, which began on July 19 and has attracted around 320,000 visitors.
