The World Health Organization confirmed on Monday that the Omicron variant carries a high risk infection, with several counties already restricting travel in response to its discovery.

"China appreciates that South Africa has shared relevant information on the latest variant of COVID-19 with the world in a timely manner. We believe that the response to the the epidemic must be based on science, and we support the World Health Organization in continuing to lead and assist countries' responses to the epidemic and in promoting international cooperation," said Zhao.

Zhao stated that the finding of the new variant would 'definitely lead to challenges' in controlling the spread of the virus, but stressed that China has 'abundant experience this regard.'

The 2022 Winter Olympics are scheduled to run from February 4 to February 20, 2022, in Beijing.
