Taipei residents were split over the visit of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Wednesday, as tensions with Beijing heightened.

“Firstly, her visit means support to Taiwan," said Cheng Sheng-Yuen, an estate agent. "We welcome her with full heart," he added.

However, others questioned the motivations behind the visit.

"I think it is the US policy, they just care about themselves," said Jenny Fei, a pharmacist. "They do not care about the problem of ordinary people in other countries," she added.

Pelosi and her delegation arrived in Taiwan on Tuesday evening, despite strong protests from Beijing, and a promise of 'countermeasures'.

China’s Foreign Ministry summoned the US Ambassador to Beijing for an official protest, after Pelosi landed in Taipei, warning that Washington may 'pay the price.'

The Chinese Defence Ministry announced a series of military drills around Taiwan. The US also increased its military presence, with its USS Ronald Reagan aircraft carrier reportedly heading to waters southeast of the island.
