Description

Rescuers were seen clearing debris in Kharkov on Thursday after local authorities reported that four people had been killed in an alleged Russian drone strike.

Footage shows shattered windows and windshields, as well as scorched fire engines and vehicles near a partially destroyed building.

Ukrainian officials reported that three rescue workers were among those killed in the strike while responding to an earlier attack. They added that the alleged UAV attack also left 12 people wounded and around 350,000 residents without power.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called it 'despicable and cynical,' alleging that 'when the rescuers arrived at the scene of the strike, the terrorists attacked again'.

Russia has not commented on the reported attack at time of publication. It has previously strongly denied targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure, saying its actions are directed at military and military-linked sites.

Moscow launched a military offensive in Ukraine in late February 2022 after recognising the independence of the Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics (DPR and LPR), claiming that Kiev had failed to guarantee their special status under the 2014 Minsk Agreements, and urging Ukraine to declare itself officially neutral and give assurances that it would never join NATO.

Kiev denounced the Russian action as an invasion. Zelensky imposed martial law throughout the country, announcing a general mobilisation, while the EU and the US imposed several rounds of sanctions on Moscow.
