Description

On Monday, Muslim pilgrims headed to Mina in eastern Mecca to perform 'the stoning of the devil' ritual by hurling the three minor, middle, and big Jamarat (pebbles) on the second day of Eid al-Adha.

Footage shows crowds of pilgrims in Mina carrying their umbrellas, throwing the pebbles, and praying. The pilgrims head to Mina to throw 21 pebbles, 7 at each wall.

The Saudi Ministry of Health issued a warning on Monday about the high temperatures in Mecca that have resulted in a number of deaths. It is expected that the temperature could reach 49 degrees Celsius when pilgrims conclude their rituals.

The ministry advised pilgrims “to avoid heat stress by carrying umbrellas and drinking lots of water.” Tawfiq Al-Rabiah, the Saudi Minister of Hajj and Umrah, declared that 1,833,164 pilgrims had made the journey this season, indicating “the success of the preparations to move pilgrims from Mecca and Mina to Arafat.”

Islam requires every Muslim with the financial means to make the pilgrimage at least once in their lifetime.

Hajj is one of the largest religious rituals in Islam and one of the Five Pillars of Islam.
