Iranian President Hassan Rouhani congratulated the winner of the presidential elections ahead of the official announcement during a government meeting in Tehran on Saturday.

"Congratulations to the person who was elected by the people. Now that the results have not been officially announced yet, I will delay the formal congratulations a bit according to the law. But, well, it is clear who has won enough votes in this election and is elected by the people today, and God willing, he will actually take over the presidency in 45 days," said Rouhani.

Iran's presidential election took place on Friday with candidates including Expediency Discernment Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei Mirqaed, Judiciary Chief Ebrahim Raisi, parliamentarian Amir-Hossein Ghazizadeh and former Central Bank governor Abdolnaser Hemmati.

Opinion polls have suggested that Raisi, a close ally of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, was likely to win the vote.
