Media and rescuers were seen at the crash site of the helicopter carrying the late President Ebrahim Raisi in East Azerbaijan province on Monday.

"I am exactly where the helicopter carrying the President and his accomplices crashed," one reporters stated. "Since yesterday, the rescue operation has started after the occurrence of this incident, the forces of IRGC, Basij, police force, and army did not sleep and helped each other, and the people of the region were helping these forces."

He added that the bodies had been found and removed from the site.

Raisi had been at the inauguration of the Qiz-Qalasi Dam and met with Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev. The Iranian president, his Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and others were confirmed dead by state media and officials after the US-made Bell 212 helicopter came down in the mountains during heavy fog. No official cause has been reported at time of publication.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei declared five days of national mourning. First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber will take over as acting president for an interim period, with elections scheduled after 50 days. Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani becomes acting foreign minister.

Condolences came from the leaders of Russia, India, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria, Egypt and others. Raisi, a conservative cleric seen as close to the Supreme Leader, was elected in 2021.
