At least 51 were killed while 20 injured after a coal mine exploded in Tabasa, Iran's South Khorasan province on Sunday.

Footage shows rescuers retrieving mine explosion victims while some survivors were also seen watching the search operations continue. Several ambulances and a helicopter were also seen on standby at the explosion site.

State-media IRNA news agency reported that the blast took place due to a methane gas leak at a coal mine run by the Madanjoo company in Tabas, some 540 km (335 miles) southeast of Iran's capital, Tehran.

At least 69 people were reported to have been working in two blocks, B and C, of the mine affected by the gas leak which occurred around 21:00 local time (17:30 GMT) on Saturday.

Search and rescue operations concluded for Block B while it continues for missing miners who were working in Block C as announced by South Khorasan Province governor Ali Akbar Rahimi in a media interview. He noted that the methane density in the block is high and the operation will take around three to four hours.

Iran's President Masoud Pezeshkian said he has ordered all efforts be made to rescue those still trapped and aid victims’ families, adding that an investigation has been opened in regards to the incident, according to media reports.
